This has been my FAVORITE mechanical pencil for over 20 years! It's Excellent for taking looong notes, calculations, standardized #2 lead tests, precision sketch/drawing, .... It is out when using the pencil to write. It does slide back in with the lead. I usually push the top, and then push the lead and sleeve back up into the tip. It does not retract by itself. I suppose I could leave it sticking out, but it would poke holes in my shirt pocket. **Q: There have been two versions of this pencil--is the image shown the exact version of this pencil sent?** A: Yes, at least it was in 2015. I have the old version and this one from 2015.
