Yes everything Festool is expensive but there are reasons. Try out an orbital sander sometime. 100% dust extraction and NO swirl marks or buy a cheap Home Depot one and take five times longer with a crummy job. WL **Q: can the tool be used to cut angled mortises for shutters?** A: No. Not for shutters, which have angled mortises on the stiles. The cutter head always cuts parallel to the fence. That axis is fixed. **Q: I am new to woodworking and buying tools for the first time. Would you recommend this or the biscuit cutter since it is only $170?** A: It depends on what you are doing. I bought a biscuit cutter and used it to make panels when I first started. That evolved to using dowel pins and now I’m probably going to purchase the DF 500. The reason is I want to make chairs using mortise and tenon joint. If not for this I would stick with dowel pins. All I needed was a self centering drill jig and was in business. It takes more time but it’s better than biscuits and way less expensive than Festool. It’s expensive but the build quality, design and functionality of this tool is AMAZING. This has become my new favorite tool and if you can afford one I would highly recommend buying one. You really have to use it to fully appreciate what it is. I have absolutely no regrets about buying it and after using it, I couldn’t imagine not having it. Also, the dust collection on this thing is far better than any other tool I own. I always wear a respirator when working in the shop but don’t feel the need to when using this tool. The body of the tool and handle on the fence are a little scuffed up.
