It's going to take a while for the black to grow out, but this dye hits the roots and gives a nice reddish sheen over the black. I don't wash my hair too often, only about once a week because it is thin and dry, so I've never had a problem with this washing out before the next application. I also alternate this with a permanent dark burgundy. One box is enough for a short style - more than a pixie but not quite chin length twice.
