Peter is a far from stuck in traditionalism as can be! I found his thoughts and perspectives on riding to be refreshing, informative, inspiring, and very applicable to all riding disciplines, not just jumping. I have shown this book to several students who are not interested in jumping (one rides western only) and all have been able to take something from it.All writers of riding instruction books talk about "use of the seat". Peter is the first I have ever read to emphasize the importance of "non-use of the seat" as well. This is one of the many tidbits that opened my eyes in this book.Scattered throughout the book are "spot checks" to help you determine just where you are in your riding competence. It is probably not where you think you are. Sometimes it is just use of different words that can make a philosophy or technique stick in your head: like where he talks about using "a little more salt or a little more sugar"; if it won't stick in your head, you can't use it when you need it.This very colorful book contains tons of beautiful photos and well-drawn diagrams that will inspire you to a greater relationship with your horse: your partner, your friend. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding! *by J***M on Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2014* Until I read this book, I thought competitive riding was a genteel way of reinforcing good riding techniques. My grand daughter recently placed first in a National Competition and asked me to read this book. Wow, it is a competitive edge in its own right. As reference material, it covers horse and rider training techniques in practical detail. It provides real training exercise as well as the reasoning and measurable checks for the effectiveness of each exercise. "Practice does not make perfect, only perfect practice makes perfect". The information shared in the chapter about walking the course is priceless. I highly recommend this book to competitors and those who wish to enjoy riding from an informed perspective. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ All the elements of a fantastic guide *by E***H on Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2012* I love Peter Leone's "Ride the Body" video, and based on that I finally went ahead and bought the book. It's absolutely gorgeous! With diagrams, excellent explanations, appropriate anecdotes, and some really fantastic photos, this book has enough information for me as a trainer to learn and is easily accessible for the students.There are some great exercises as well as the usual-but-necessary discussion of safe equipment and a proper horse.One of the things about this book that I enjoy over some of the other common jumping manuals is his emphasis on flatwork.
