Review: A year's worth of zero waste laundry for $40! - I only use soapnuts to do my laundry, & these are the highest quality I've ever used. They are gentle enough to wash my delicate silk lingerie, but also effective enough to wash my partner's sweaty work clothes from his outdoor job.I add a little lemon juice & white vinegar for stinky or stained clothes. Soapnuts are perfect for my super sensitive skin & allergies, & I've even gotten my friends using soapnuts to wash their baby's clothes & even to wash their babies! It's that gentle. They have a very light vinegar scent that disappears when the clothes are dry. If you use it in a bath it leaves no scent at all on the skin, so it's great to use before working a hive of bees. I place 6 berries in the nice muslin bags provided & soak it in a little bowl of hot water for 5 minutes to release the saponins, then I pour the water & the bag in the washing machine & let it run. Don't put the bag of soapnuts through the dryer, take it out & let it air dry. You can re-use each bag 8 times. If I want my clothes smelling good I drop some essential oils on wool dryer balls & scent them in the dryer, which makes more sense because the fragrance doesn't get rinsed away like it does when you puts essential oils in the washer. I greatly appreciate that NaturOil uses cloth packaging, it's the closest thing I can get to zero waste, if only it didn't have that plastic sample tube of liquid soap. I will buy this product on repeat because it is natural, safe, gentle, & effective.
Review: Excellent product! - Soap nuts are extremely economical to use, and they contain no chemicals. If you're looking for ways to reduce the chemical exposure in your household, this is one of the easiest, most effective, most affordable ways you can do that. How I use soap nuts: I put 5 soap nuts into the small cloth bag (included with purchase) and tie it shut. I drop it into my top-loading washer along with my dirty laundry and run the load as usual. (Note: I wash everything in cold water.) When the washer stops, I remove the bag of soap nuts and set it on top of the dryer to dry. When the soap nuts feel squishy inside the bag, I know it's time to dump them out and refill with 5 fresh soap nuts. I usually get 5 wash loads per bagful. I do not use any chemicals such as fabric softener or dryer sheets. I do, however, put vinegar into the final rinse dispenser of my washer (1/4 cup in summer when it's humid and 1/2 cup in winter when it's dry). The vinegar reduces static electricity for clothes dried in the dryer. (This is something I've done for years, before I started using soap nuts.) Our laundry includes the following: towels, sheets, my clothes, my husband's clothes (he's a professional painter, he works on our vehicles, and he does yard work - so his stuff can get pretty dirty), and cloth diapers when the grandchildren visit. I've tried to determine what our laundry smells like after it's been washed and dried either in the dryer or on the clothesline. All I can say is that it smells "clean." The soap nuts don't seem to impart any particular scent onto the laundry. We keep a notepad by our washer on which we record each wash load and note whenever we start a fresh bag of soap nuts. I probably won't do this forever, but being a new soap nuts user myself, I wanted to see how long they lasted and how the cost per load worked out. We have now used soap nuts for a total of 68 laundry loads. We've used 5.8 oz. of the 4 lb. package we purchased, which, at my purchase price of $49.95, works out to a cost of $.07 per load! The average number of soap nuts we have used per load is 5.7. The literature that came with the soap nuts said that they have other household cleaning uses besides laundry. I haven't tried them on my dishes or anything else yet, but one of these days I just might. If you aren't convinced yet to buy soap nuts in a large quantity, please buy a trial size and use them for a few loads. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Anyone have any experience using this product with front loading washers? I have an HE front loader and have been thinking about buying this product.**
A: I also have a front loading HE washer. The soap nuts work great in it. You do need to use warm water, if using cold, soak the soap nuts in warm water first to activate them.

**Q: Do you need to use hot water for these to do their job?**
A: I just put them in the provided bag, crush them a bit by hand and always wash in cold water. Does the job for me. I do use more than many people do -- probably about 16 soap nuts. I tend to use them for 6-8 loads.

**Q: They say to let the soap nuts dry between uses. I do multiple loads back to back, can I use the same, wet nuts or do they need to dry between loads?**
A: You can use the same wet nuts. They work better when wet. I either soak mine in a jar and pour the whole contents into the laundry or add some warm water to a jar with nuts and let sit 5 min before adding to laundry. Not sure why they would have to dry when it says they work better wet? Works fine for me to use them back to back.

**Q: Do you take out the bag of soap nuts before the rinse cycle starts?**
A: You can, but it is not necessary. If you leave the bag in for the rinse cycle the berries act as a natural fabric softener. I hope this helps.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We bought a 5 lb bulk bag of pieces at first- it was a great deal and I just used the last of that ...
*by M***I on December 28, 2015*

My family of five have been using NaturOli soap nuts for three years now. We bought a 5 lb bulk bag of pieces at first- it was a great deal and I just used the last of that bag today. If you buy the bulk bag of pieces, it really doesn't make a difference. They clean just as well as the whole nuts, most of them are whole anyway. I just bought by next bag and ended up buying this 4 lb bag because it had free shipping and the bulk bag of pieces didn't. The bulk bag of pieces come in a plastic sack with a couple of muslin bags for putting the soap nuts in the laundry. This 4 lb bag came in a large muslin bag, as shown in the picture, with four smaller bags for washing with, a pamphlet about soap nuts and a small bottle of concentrated washing liquid. Here's how I use soap nuts to the best effect. I started using them with cloth diapers but now we use them on all our clothes. I found that I don't like the muslin wash bags. They are a little thick and the drawstring is hard to untie after washing a couple of loads. I put a handful of soapnuts, about five or six in old pantyhose tied shut. I have a front-loading HE washer so it cleans best when it is full. For better dispersal, I put three pantyhose bags in different spots of the laundry. I do a presoak setting so that plenty of saponin is released in the water. You do not have to remove the soapnuts at any time during the wash cycle. The saponin that is released during the rinse cycle acts like a fabric softener. I had NEVER used fabric softener so when we first started using soapnuts, I kept feeling my clothes because they felt so silky and soft. I also use soap nuts for cleaning. I've scrubbed my front porch and washed my car. Just throw some in a bucket of water. It won't look very sudsy but it works. For example, I was scrubbing my porch with just hose water to prep it for re-painting. It still looked dingy even though the water was running clear so I thought I'd put some soap nuts in a bucket of water and see if it worked. There were barely any bubbles but when I started scrubbing, gray dingy water started streaming off the porch and the porch paint looked much brighter. One note for people who are used to washing with chemical and fragrance filled detergents- Soap nuts will not remove ground-in dirt and oil. Mud-coated socks and clothes will come out clean but dingy looking. I keep an environmentally friendly detergent on hand for those clothes. Soap nuts work great for everyday laundry and cloth diapers. Also, soap nuts do have a scent to them. If you are used to a strong perfume smell, you probably won't notice anything. We used to wash with fragrance-free detergents, so I definitely noticed a scent to my clothes at first, kind of an herbally smell. I don't notice it anymore.
