Grips you right from the beginning as a hobo and a wealthy man about town get their heads blown off by some mysterious force. 'Natch, Doc and crew get on the case quickly. There is so much to love about this book.Explosions? Check! (in spades) Cool gadgets? You bet. An intriguing mystery? Of course. Escaped convicts, volcanic eruptions, more explosions than you can shake a stick at, and of course the Bronze Man and crew packing all the goodies to bring down the mysterious cloaked villain.A few nit-picky things that kept this from a five star rating: Pat Savage is kept off-screen for the entirety of the story. She's mentioned, but doesn't get to tag along on this one. Doc and crew don't exactly bring their 'A' game at a few points. Without too much of a spoiler alert, Doc accidentally falls victim to his own knock-out gas, and the fantastic five are loosing their 'super-firers' left and right (Seriously, 3 out of 5 loose their weapons to the same two clowns) The identity of the cloaked villain is known prettymuch from the outset, yet suspense is constantly trying to be built around the villain's true identity. And, in the finale, the explanation of why the villain decided to start blowing up gold all over the place really fell flat for me.Don't be discouraged by the nit-picks though. This was still a great read. If you want a 'Doc Savage fix' this will fit the bill nicely. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An a-one dandy of a mystery *by W***R on Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2012* HORROR IN GOLD starts off in Mahatten with a bang, well actually an explosion. Two men walk past each other and their heads explode! A little bit later at another location the back portion of Doc's roadster vanishes! Two buildings blow up! At the end we're told why the adventure started off this way and that's when we realize there never truly was a #1 bad guy.As to what is causing these explosions and how are revealed before we even reach the half-way point of the story.So what does Doc think about this new invention? He brings up some interesting observations, mainly if you sell a huge amount of gold on the open market, will not the price of gold go way down? Also in the 1930's the currencies of many nations were backed up with gold on deposit and if the price of gold went way down, so would the currencies of these nations and thus prolong the depression that was going on at the time,HORROR IN GOLD is the second of eight new, wild adventures that are going to be published in the near future (and hopefully more). I'd say it would be worth your time and money to read the next six as they come out. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A breath of fresh air for Doc Savage fans. *by R***S on Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2012* Having read most of the original Doc Savage books and being a huge fan of the Bantam paperback versions, I was tremendously excited to see that Will Murray is reviving Doc with his new "Wild Adventures" series. I read "Horror in Gold" in less than a day. The book does a great job of capturing the tone and style of the Lester Dent stories. It is so wonderful to have Doc and his men back and in the hands of the world's leading authority on all things Savage, Mr. Murray. I am hoping that this series will go for at least 181 new Doc adventures!
