The hot comb has three levels of heat settings. I used the first one (which is about 160 degrees, read the instructions and details for the exact temp settings) to quickly press my hair after washing, conditioning and moisturizing my hair. It heated up quickly and pressed my roots really well. There was no smoke or burnt smell. It was hot enough to straighten my roots and hot enough to burn you so be careful. The hot comb is easy to use, didn't take long to touch up my hair and the price point is good. I would purchase this product again. Although, I can't say how this electric hot comb would work on natural African American hair that's been detangled first but I think this hot comb is worth trying out. If it's not enough to press out natural hair, get a refund or a flat iron.
