Does one have to place it so the "split" follows the desired line? Alignment/mechanism?** A: Yes. Figure out how you want the split to run and then place your wedges so it splits the rock in that direction as the wedges push apart the feathers. Two things I learned: Make your holes 5/8", not 3/4". I tried 3/4" holes and it didn't work as well. Also make sure you drill your holes deep enough. It's a bummer if your wedges bottom out in the hole before the split begins. Other than that, it's amazing ancient technology at work. **Q: How deep of a hole do you drill? The description says 1.5” but this seems very shallow considering the shim is 4.5” long.** A: The shoulders of the outer shims sit near the top of the hole and there has to be room for the wedge to go right through without bottoming out. Looking at the dimensions in the diagram about 4" minimum depth. If the wedge does hit the bottom it can be extracted by drilling a second hole alongside but it's best to avoid that. The description also says a hole 0.5" diameter and that's wrong too. **Q: Some of the shims have bent at the narrow place and then broken off. To make garden boarders. As disc cutting would have taken days, covered my hoses and garden in cutting dust and watery slop and also cost way to much. This time tested way was invaluable, each slab needed around nine 14mm holes about 75mm deep. Clean out hole very important. Then set up with the wedge and feathers, several hammer sticks each in turn and hay presto. I've now got 135 meters of 6 X 5 inch granite edged boraders to my garden. Thought I'd break or bend at least 1 but there hardly even worn in.
