A: If there is visible rust on the metal, you should use something like rust cure or some other phosphorus acid solution that will kill the rust before applying the paint. You could just spray it, but the rust will likely come back and cause the paint to peel off.

**Q: some of the clear oat is peeling from my brass front door handset, I want to attemp repair before I drop another $300 on a handset,**
A: You put 10 dollar clear glue over a 300 dollar door knob?.... The fact that your handset can't survive without a cheap enamel is more worrisome. My 15 dollar Kwikset knob looks brand new after 7 years.
