My solution right now, is not to wash it anymore; rather, just spot-clean by hand, as necessary. While this bag is wonderful, I must say that its durability doesn’t seem to match the ones we used when I was in, during the 80's. Those bags, we could just throw in the washing machine & dryer, and everything would be fine. Sadly, that’s not the case for these wonderful replicas. Yes, even though I truly do love this bag, it just doesn't have the durability on the inside fabric, like the sleeping bags we had during the Cold War. If you MUST clean it, I would consider getting your bag dry-cleaned, as this is the gentler of the two washing options. I hope this helps. **Q: Does this come with the separate head cover? OD wool with Velcro connector under the chin?** A: If you're referring to the "sleeping hat" the old school polymer green one nope that thing is long gone . They normally came with the initial issue. I haven't looked at the thing a while but it's either a string or Velcro strap..... **Q: do these have a musty smell to them?** A: The one I received was sealed in a plastic bag. Mine came without any musty smell.
