Review: Great for a first foray into kombucha brewing - My first foray into kombucha making and I really didn't know what to expect; I needn't have worried. I knew that this scoby was coming from a respected and known supplier who has a great website and 'how to' videos available. It took a bit of planning on my part because I really wanted to get it right and the website and videos helped with every step. I did get a little worried that it hadn't worked/gone bad but rather than throwing it all away, I kept the brew going for a few weeks - this turned put to be the best thing because it initially didn't look like it had worked but it turned out that my house is just not very warm and so it took longer to ferment. When I bottled it I went for a 'second fermentation' in the bottles and rather than just adding sugar for this, I added candied ginger - and it tasted amazing! I used Yorkshire Tea teabags (of course!) to make the first brew -2l of water and 4 teabags- and it was delicious and easy... when you know how. I've no idea if kombucha has all the benefits we read about but I do know that making my own is cheap, easy, tasty and more likely healthier than bought ones which have preservatives in. One scoby for endless brews of 2 litres of homemade kombucha - a bargain!±. In the summer I hope to get a lot more because it'll be warmer and only take a few days to brew before bottling! (I hope). Buy it, try it - why not?
Review: Easy peasy! RESEARCH HOW to make Kombucha. - Brilliant company to deal with! I have bought a lot of things from FF and here's what you need to know. 1) go to their website or their YouTube channel to see how to use their products. Many reviews say they don't work but that is inaccurate in my opinion because of basic lack of awareness of how fermented starters need to be fed to be activated. 2) there are instructions sections for everything they sell on their website but if you find processing information visually easier than reading it then definitely look at their YouTube. They have a brilliantly funny man who does most of the videos and he is something you've got to see! 3) buy some books on fermenting. The Cultured Club, Asa Simonsson or River Cottage Handbook 18 is on fermentation but there is a wealth of information online. This isn't a hobby or health benefit you can just start without info, equipment and a good understanding of processes. 4) keep a fermenting diary so you can note down days you need to do stuff on like feeding grains, notes on performance etc. Many processes require you perform an action 48 hourly or 72/96 hourly and keeping a log is an easy way to remember. 5) troubleshooting is crucial. Just because something doesn't instantly respond it doesn't mean the product is faulty. You can't substitute ingredients easily with fermenting. Eg I love coconut sugar and do not like cane sugar and wherever possible I use a brown sugar substitute for reducing calories or if not, coconut sugar. You can't use coconut sugar or white sugar and expect results with this. Use what experts recommend/advise and then you have as few variables as possible which you can pinpoint as reasons your ferment isn't working as expected. Don't put your cultures near the coldest window in your house and expect appropriate temperature to be found. Use a heat mat if your house is cold. The coolest setting will be enough. You're encouraging bacteria to multiply and colonise and to do that they need ambient temperature. Research what your particular culture needs to do so. Conclusion - there are very few instances where your product is "dead". They need love and nurture. They're your new friends. Living beings. If you ate crap, couldn't move about enough and were stuck in a too cold or too hot environment you wouldn't thrive as nature intended. Nature intends these cultures are fed, looked after and cared for. Please don't blame the purchase or the company or leave a PRODUCT review about the delivery guy. These products work well. I have successfully got Kombucha and water kefir continuous production going as well as sourdough starter from Freshly Fermented. There are no product issues I have found. They're accessible for customer service and trouble shooting. Small business should be cherished in the UK. Especially when they're innovative and doing good things for the health of the nation. In my experience, lack of understanding of how fermenting works is the reason people write poor reviews. If you look up how to do it all and stick by it to the letter I promise it will work out fine for you! Enjoy your gut health goodies! ☺ 🤗
