They are approximately 22.4" when folded and the height of a typical back pack is 18". Carry on luggage is about 20-22". This will fit fine in your large checked luggage. I jerry rigged my 18" backpack so that they will hold these crutches if I put them in the side water bottle holders and secure them with an elastic velcro band that is 24.6" long and can stretch to 40". You will need a strap that can wrap around the circumference of your backpack, and a backpack with water bottle holder(s). I find it very comfortable because of its lite weight. **Q: can the internal bungee cord be replaced?** A: I haven't figured out a way to do it. I wondered the same thing because I ran over the top end of my first one. I gave up on replacing the top end and gorilla glued it along with duct tape. I use it as a spare and bought another one.
