Since the gel has an edible element to it it also will mold after some time and a moldy environment is life threatening to ants. I've done a gel farm long ago and experienced this (cant remember how long it took mold to grow though). It's cool to watch them tunnel in the gel but the ants will live much longer (if well cared for) in non-gel habitats. **Q: Can I add more ants to the farm with live ones currently in there or do i need to wait until all have died first?** A: You could add more ants from the same colony if you provided your own ants in the first place. If you added ants from different colonies, there might be an ant war. The first ants might regard the new ants as invaders. **Q: Can the ants get out?** A: Not unless you leave the lid off.
