The mats have detailed roads and rivers that if you look closely will line up with the other mats. By turning the mats you can extend the game surface into a grid as big as you want and have room to play.I love these mats. Yes the price seems high at first, but they are not cheap quality junk that will be wrecked in a year. They are built to last and bring the game to life. I have no interest in the game but LOVE the miniatures they use. Most are 1/144 scale but a few are 1/200 scale (if that matters to you). They are very well done and compare favorably with other brands like Wings of the Great War (though these are mostly 1/72 scale). The stand is unique because it has a large base (good for NOT tipping over) with info about the aircraft and the look of a map, with segments to display the aircraft at different altitudes. I have a LOT of these now and am delighted that they include many aircraft types which are NOT available from Wings of the Great War (such as the giant Zeppelin Strakken R VI bomber). No deck building a la x wing, nor any counter intuitive rules interpretations or updated FAQs.You pick manuvers from the card deck, place them in sequence on your control panel, you place the card in front if the plane, you move the plane.That's it. Adcanced rules can be added a la carte as the players' experience builds.Damage is determined without dice. Damage counters are selected at random and placed face down on the target's control panel. Damage could be 0 or up to 8 with special damage. This removes the feeling of being robbed by the dice (x wing again: six red attach dice all blanks = table flip).Which leads to longer engagements in which planes can have up to three or more passes before an opponent is destroyed.
