I bought them for quilting purposes and to prevent noticeable puncture marks in fabrics. They also work very well on sheers and other fabrics. Since these pins are so thin, they also tend to bend more than regular pins - especially if used through layers of thick fabric. I really like these pins, and I am careful not to use them through thick layers while piecing fabrics together. The biggest drawback is whenever I accidentally stick myself with these pins, because they are much sharper than regular pins. Sticks from these pins are more painful than sticks from regular sewing pins. **Q: I am looking to use these to pin buttons to a styrofoam ball for Christmas ornaments so I was wondering how large the ball part of the pin is compared to a button hole? Thanks!** A: Don't know if you still need answer but here's a couple of tips 1) regardless of the pin's length styrofoam pulls away from metal, so if you want the pins to stay in place you should dip the tip in a bit of white glue before inserting it into the styrofoam. 2) Because of this you don't need long pins -- there are less expensive short pins (3/8 to 1/2 inch) intended particularly for embellishing styrofoam - just remember to put your bead or sequin on the pin, dip the point of the pin in white glue and then push it into the styrofoam. Hope this helps. **Q: Are these good for general purpose sewing? Quilting as well as apparel sewing (woven and knit)? Will they work with heavier fabrics like denim?** A: Yes, I use them for quilting and sewing. There is no problem using them on heavy fabric such as denim. They are super sharp which I like. **Q: Will these pins rust if steam ironed over?** A: I can honestly say that I never have pins around long enough for them to rust.
