You will need a 2-1/8 in diameter hole for the latch assembly. Since my door had the common 1-7/8 hole, I had to enlarge the hole with a hole saw. I made pre-drilled guides out of thin pieces of paneling wood to keep the hole saw steady while widening the old hole. A paper template is provided, but I didn't use it because of some unusual features of my door. I think most would find it helpful. Unless you are unusually strong, you will still need the pre-cut guide to keep the hole saw from "walking" during drilling. I used a couple of "C" clamps to keep the wooden guide from shifting.
