The carpet squares have a rich color to them, and are very soft. The edges are bound,with a felt like backing on them all. You get 6 of each color. They are the perfect size for my kindergaeteners. Some people complained about a chemical smell. I did not notice a smell other than a new carpet smell, which I happen to like.
