I expect it will need replaced every few years or so. But it’s easy put in and take out, no tools. “Doing the job right” costs thousands. So I’m pleased. A P-trap prevents sewer gasses from entering the home. When full of water it is nothing more than a drain. Give it a try - can;t hurt. I had been trying to get a drain seal for my floor drain for some time, as my house is on the top of a hill, and due to gravity and having several bathrooms etc, flushing toilets in places further down the hill can suck the standing water out of the floor drain pipe in the laundry room which is at the top of the hill, causing sewer smell to come into the house. The hard plastic drain seals I bought before this are about 4 mil too big as the previous owners of my house wedged a 2cm length of pipe inside the existing drain pipe to attach the floor drain grate to, which can't be removed. As this Oatey seal is rubber, I have been able to insert it into the drain and create a seal below the 2cm section of wedged pipe, where it has been sitting for a number of weeks without moving. There have been spills in that room, and I am pleased to report that water going down the floor drain has not displaced it.
