## Description

Product Description BACHER Flattening Stone for Whetstones – fix and reshape Damaged Sharpening Stones, Recommended for #100-#8000 grit Stones With time, the surface of whetstones stops being perfectly even and flat. This is a natural and inevitable consequence of sharpening knives on a water stone. Uneven use of the surface of the stone makes the sharpening process more difficult and its effects unsatisfactory. In order for the whetstone to sharpen properly, it must be perfectly even and the appearance of any cavities requires immediate repair. The solution to this problem is Bacher's flattening stone, which quickly and effectively levels the surface of waterstones, restoring their proper abrasive properties . Thanks to the use of coarse and very durable silicon carbide, with a gradation of 220, the correction of the deformed surface of worn-out whetstones becomes extremely easy . Specification Material: Silicon carbide Grit: 220 Length: 180mm Width: 60mm Height: 30mm Weight: 560g An unquestionable advantage of the stone is precisely cut grooves , which have been designed especially for easy and quick removal of steel residues that settle on the stone surface after sharpening . The unique grooving function provides a much more accurate process of removing irregularities from the stone surface. Moreover, the large abrasive surface of our levelling stone is perfectly sized in order to achieve the desired smoothing effect in the shortest possible time. How to use the flattening stone? Step 1 Put the stone sharpener and smoothing stone into water for about 15 minutes. This will make the smoothing effect of the stone surface faster. Step 2 After removing the stone from the water, use a pencil to draw several lines running across the entire surface of the stone. Step 3 Rub the smoothing stone's corrugated side with medium pressure. The disappearance of the drawn lines will mean that the stone surface has already been perfectly aligned. Note: In order to make the smoothing process easier and faster, make sure that the surface of the sharpener is constantly moistened.

Review: Very useful, should have bought one before. - A great bit of kit to add to my sharpening station. Made light work of my Japanese waterstones; 2,000, 5,000, 8,000 grit. Highly recommended.
Review: Fantastic! - I got into using Japanese wetstones some years ago in my 50s. Frankly, these are skills you should learn at school! Every other knife sharpening technique and tool seems such a waste of time, effort and money once you have mastered the - really quite relaxing - technique. My stones though are always getting worn and dippy, so I occasionally dry them and flatten them out with sandpaper or wet&dry paper on a flat surface. It works, but it's messy and slow. I saw a few 'Meh!' reviews about this stone flattening tool, so to balance things up a bit I have to say I'm blown away by this inexpensive, fast and effective tool. A really big surprise. Frankly one of these will probably outlast me. It's one of those tools that I wish I'd bought years ago and I would recommend to anyone who appreciates a sharp blade. A really fast way to get a dead flat wetstone. JM.

## Features

- FLAT STONE, SHARP EDGE: A hollowed whetstone rounds the bevel and steals precision from every stroke - you press harder, the angle drifts, and only the high spots of the stone do any cutting. This Bacher flattening stone brings a worn, dished or uneven sharpening surface back to true, so your edge angle stays constant from heel to tip and the whole face cuts again. Use it on a stone that has already cupped in the middle, or as routine maintenance after every session to keep the surface dead flat - a stone you flatten regularly needs only a minute of work, a badly neglected one takes longer. A dished stone is not worn out, it is simply out of shape.
- COARSE 220 GRIT, JIS R6001 CERTIFIED: Cut from silicon carbide (carborundum), the abrasive that cuts quickly and wears slowly. The 220 grit is certified to JIS R6001, the Japanese Industrial Standard issued by the Japanese Standards Association - the particle size is verified, not merely declared. One coarse grit covers the whole working range, from #100 shaping stones to #8000 finishing stones, so there is only ever one face to reach for, and the finish it leaves is fine enough to sharpen on straight away. Quality is inspected by an independent third-party inspection company.
- FITS EVERY WHETSTONE ON YOUR BENCH: Levels Japanese waterstones, oilstones, natural stones, ceramic and resin-bonded stones, combination stones and bench stones alike - whatever the grit, and whatever you sharpen on them: kitchen knives, pocket knives, chisels, plane irons, scissors, secateurs, axes and garden tools. It also takes the glaze off a surface that has stopped cutting. One block covers the whole bench, so you are not matching a different flattener to every stone you own. Not intended for diamond plates, which stay flat by design and do not need levelling.
- DEEP, SELF-CLEARING GROOVES: The grooves run right across the working face - the face you actually rub with - at a set spacing and angle, so slurry and removed stone are carried away instead of clogging the contact patch. That is what keeps the cut biting from the first pass to the last and makes the result predictable; a plain flat block loads up and slows down. The 180 x 60 x 30 mm body gives a long, stable stroke, sits squarely in one hand rather than needing two, and is thick enough to leave years of usable material even under daily workshop use.
- HOW TO USE IT, STEP BY STEP: 1) Pencil a grid of lines about 2 cm apart across the hollow surface. 2) Soak both stones in a bowl of water for 10 minutes, until the bubbling stops. 3) Rub with even pressure, edge to edge, until every pencil line has gone - a lightly worn stone takes about a minute, a badly dished one up to 30 minutes. 4) Rinse both stones and let them dry standing on edge. Always work wet: used dry the surface loads up with dust and cuts slowly. The pencil grid is the surest way to see when the face is flat - the lines vanish last exactly where the stone stood highest.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Does the job!
*by O***N on 2 June 2024*

My sharpening stones were getting worn unevenly, and this was causing issues when sharpening my plane blades. I kept looking at these flattening stones, some are really expensive. Due to the price I took the plunge, and I have to say it did a cracking job, made me realise just how out of flat my stones were. I flattened a 1000, 2000 and 3000 grit stone. Takes a bit of effort but worth it.
