Q: How will this collar hold up against salt water?

I've been through several of these collars mainly because we wanted new designs. They have all held up great. Our lab swims in the ocean from time to time and he also swims in our salt water pool almost daily in the summer and they have held up great.

Q: Can you trim excess length off the collar and burn the end so it doesn’t fray?

Not sure if you can do that or not. However, we have bought 4 of these collars and none of the ends have frayed. These are very good quality collars and can last a long time. If you are looking for a good quality waterproof dog collar---it will be hard to find a better one than these.
