The crank mechanism in particular is a pain. This style has a sturdier geometry for supporting something more than a couple of pounds. Easily assembled, the feet and all legs are adjustable which makes it flexible for uneven ground surfaces. As for sturdiness, it supports my 9 lb speakers well enough, but it certainly wobbles if touched or bumped. If the metal saddle which attaches the underside of the shelf to the tripod were only made of thicker metal, the wobbling would be far less. One odd thing is that the product box was untaped, and was shipped without an Amazon box, but all contents were present, in both of these that I ordered.
