No modifications were needed, no drilling or cutting like some others have said. It's pretty simple, measure these and cut to size, pull out the old ones, grab a pair of pliers, insert the new one as much as you can and grab the tip then pull it through. Took maybe 5 minutes total to install, didn't need to trim the tip to make it fit through the tailgate, didn't need to drill the tip to make it fit, etc. Tire sits securely against it now. For reference, I have 17x9, -12 offset with 4.5" backspacing and I had to cut about 1" off these still. They seem to be able to fit a wide range of sizes as a result of that. Review: Great product - Great product, glad I spent the few extra dollars over the cheap ones with bad reviews. I used these with 285 75 17 tires on factory 17" wheels on my wife's 2013 jk wrangler and they worked great for the spare tire. I also used a 1" wheel spacer as the tire was barely rubbing the bumper. These two things combined provided a perfect fit and a factory look and no modification to the 3rd brake light. It also keeps the weight closer to the tailgate compared to alot of other options which puts less stress on the hinges. These bump stops are a little bit tough to trim due to the high durability but can be done relatively easily with a razor knife or hack saw. Was worried I’d damage the panels.
