OR they haven't read the instructions (YES, you need to cover the grinding bowls with the included lids before grinding!) It is unfair to fault the grinder because you haven't taken the time to read. Simply add the desired spice, seal with the included lid, insert the bowl into the base, attach the outer cover, press and hold. It is perfect for spices. I actually bought this model so that I could grind individual batches of different spice mixes in separate cups. It does a great job. What it is not suited for is wet grinding. **Q: Does this function as both a coffee grinder AND spice grinder?** A: This is the spice grinder attachment for a KitchenAid coffee grinder, sold separately. This does not work on its own. The differences between this attachment & the one that comes with the coffee grinder base model are as follows: the blades are concave so they reach the bottom of the canister for a finer grind (the others are straight so they sit a bit off the bottom for a more coarse grind), the lid comes with a shaker attachment to dispense fine powders & flakes, this unit is slightly shorter & holds less volume than the coffee attachment. **Q: I bought the onyx black bcg111ob do i need to buy the accessory kit in order to grind herbs and spices? or can i just use what's in the box?** A: You can, but you shouldn't if you plan to grind spices a lot. You don't want the flavors mingling. The coffee grinder should be just for coffee. **Q: Will this spice grinder be compatible with grinder model bcg1110b?** A: I have the KitchenAid coffee grinder model BCG111ER, and the spice grinders are compatible with this (I purchased the two separately). This is only the accessories for the kitchen aid grinder. It does not come with the grinding machine. Comes with two grinder contains and and extra lid. Bought them to use for spice grinding and it works wonderful.
