My application was to protect two dwarf apple trees.I secured landscape timbers to form a base for the fence and pinned them to the ground with rebar. Drilled holes in the landscape timbers to place the bottom of the bear fence posts into. Advantages of doing that compared to just pushing them into the ground included: . Avoided high or low spots below the bear fence . Raised the fence about three inches to give more clearance from vegetation which could drain the batteries . Made the fence more resistant to leaning in . After the apples are harvested, the bear fence will be stored away and can easily be reinstalled next yearBlack bears visit our property in Juneau, Alaska most nights. No bears bothered the apple trees until last Thursday night. Then a bear apparently jumped from the top of another fence into the enclosure of the electric bear fence. One branch of one tree was broken. Judging from the way both fences looked Friday morning the bear left the same way it came in.If it was designed for to protect food stored on the ground in an open area. If used in that manner it is less likely that a bear would have come over the top of the bear fence. I speculate that if there had been more distance between the two fences it is likely that the bear would have been repelled before entering the enclosure.
