The instructions tell you to keep the spout whistle turned away from the flame if you have a gas stove because of this. The handle is wood and the knob on the lid is also wood. The bakelite is colored to look like wood. I've been using this every day for a few weeks without any problem. It's a great little tea kettle. **Q: Is the handle cool to touch when pouring?** A: I wouldn't say it is cool, but certainly not hot. I use my kettle every morning, and always pour immediately after the whistle blows. I've never been burned or felt that I needed a towel or pot holder to hold the handle. **Q: Will the tea kettle whistle or not when boiled?** A: Mine stopped whistling a while ago.
