Travel narratives are the heart of American literature. Through memorable characters, authors express themes of coming-of-age, self-discovery, and adventure.  The Road Taken does this, not through fictional narrative, but through the real events of the authors who are themselves the characters. These young men cycled coast-to-coast across the U.S. in an age without GPS, cell phones, credit card vending machines, or any of the luxuries first-world citizens take for granted.The Road Taken is an easy, but compelling, read about the real-life journey of five young men who set themselves on a path to encounter the world and test themselves. None of these characters is fictional, including some of the unbelievable, yet affable strangers they meet along the way.This book educates readers on the history and geography of the United States frontier. However, it does so much more! In a time when people are so divided by ideologies, and it seems like anyone who does not agree with me is an enemy, this narrative demonstrates the beauty of comradery, hospitality, and good-natured human relationships.I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially those who seek a thoughtful, inspirational story about the goodness of the human condition and the dedication to meet one's goals.

Guys decide to ride their bikes (bicycles) across the entire country and camp under the stars and in other interesting places along the way. They each took a change of clothes and a sleeping bag, no tents. They battled the elements, survived close calls with unforgiving strangers, lost one of their party along the way, and inspired a lifetime of endurance athletes. This is a helluva road trip on two wheels!
