The reason I didn't opt for the Chemex is its height. The Bonavita model I chose includes a warming plate, which takes up additional space. The distance between its warming plate (on bottom) and the shower head (on top) is 9 inches, which doesn't take into consideration that the center of the warming plate (where the glass carafe sits) is slightly recessed. The manufacture's product page for the Chemex 8-cup lists its height as 9 1/8", whereas the height of this item is listed to be 9". Some user reviews suggest that the Chemex 8-cup can fit if the shower head is lifted slightly, but I wanted a pour-over glass carafe that can fit easily without requiring any intervention. I purchased this item in that hope, and it works perfectly. There's just enough clearance that the glass can slide onto the Bonavita's warming plate, and when it rests in the center recess there's a nice gap between its top and the shower head. If handled with care, the glass never comes into contact with the shower head.As for this item itself..pros: * Real/branded "DURAN" borosilicate glass from Germany. This is like if it said "PYREX", but the quality of glass that "pyrex" no longer produces for household cookware; now they only sell this type of glass for scientific laboratory equipment (glass beakers, etc). * The silicone holders are perfect. Attractive and functional. They work very well and are easily removed, as they're held in place by two buttons. * The capacity (40 oz) is exactly the same as the carafe that it replaces. * The shape makes it easy to clean (with a wand brush). Other comparable products tend to be rounded (as though made of mouth blown glass), which results in areas that are more difficult to reach to clean.cons: * nonecomments: * I do wish the glass were just a tad bit thicker. It isn't so thin that I would feel at all fearful that it's likely to break as the result of normal usage. It's a very good compromise between price and quality. Nevertheless, I would have gladly paid a bit more for a heavier weight product. Of course, my use case is unusual and prevented me from buying the Chemex. * I just brewed my first 8-cup pot of coffee using this combo: Bonavita BV1800 + Cafe Brew PO108 + the reusable filter that came with the PO108. I measured 8 grams of coffee per cup.. 64 grams in total. The end result was very good. * I have a much better quality ( Osaka "To-ji" ) reusable filter arriving tomorrow. From everything I've read on the topic, the filter can make a huge difference in the quality of the resulting coffee. Chemex makes a exceptional paper filter, and this Osaka reusable filter is reviewed as being an excellent substitute. I'm looking forward to doing a taste-test comparison. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Brew, Very Storable, Mostly non-Chinese Manufacturing *by M***O on Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2020* This product comes with three pieces. A glass vase, and reusable plastic-frame filter, and a rubber hand grip. The package says it was made with US and imported materials, and the vase is definitely made in Germany. Nothing else has country of origin on it, but I would be surprised if the molded plastic filter was not made in China. Meaning the rubber grip was likely made by an American manufacturer. Those last two are just speculation on my part, but besides straight up boiling coffee grounds in a pot of water, this product is the coffee maker with the least Chinese involvement I could find online.Overall, it’s perfect if you only make coffee once in a while because you can put it away in the pantry. And if you want coffee all you have to do is boil some water, throw some coffee in filter, and pour the hot water through.I got this to replace my broken Mr. Coffee, and I was mostly interested in something I could store away until wanted. But I really do think this coffee tastes better than coffee machine coffee.Only complaint is the reusable filter is lets water through fairly quickly. And while you can add a paper filter to slow it down, it would take a while to manually pour all the water through. So while it makes very tasty coffee, don’t expect a strong brew. If that’s your preference, I’d recommend considering other products. I buy locally roasted beans and grind them at home, but that's as far as I go*This coffee maker is amazing! Best cup I've ever had! My husband thought I was bonkers to buy a "manual" coffee maker while we have a 1 month old AND a two year old. And maybe I am a little. But it's super easy! Start water boiling then grind some beans and put them in the filter. You do have baby sit it for like 30 seconds to let the grounds "bloom". (Whatever that is) but then you just pour the water in and enjoy. I only drink one cup so not having a heating element to keep it warm isn't an issue to me.What brought me over to the pour over coffee makers was the cleanliness factor. I've had a standard electric for 5 years that is on its last leg, and I don't even want to think about how disgusting it is. So the fact that it's all one, top rack dishwasher-safe, piece is amazing. Even the filter is dishwasher safe. Awesome!So if you're a coffee amateur who wants just a clean, tasty cup of coffee.
