I don't know how much the bands will loosen up over time, but it is a hard cock right out of the box. You definitely have to know how to cock a speargun to use it. You won't be grabbing the bands with your thumb and a couple of fingers on this one like some of the light action guns. I do best with three fingers positioned all the way back by the steel catch part of the band and pulling back with a very slight spreading action on the steel. The notches on the shaft are so far down and close to the handle it was impossible to pull the bands all the way down. Couldn’t get one band loaded, let alone two.
