Review: Perfect Winter Boots for my Golden Retrievers - I purchased the Pawz boots for my two golden retrievers and would highly recommend them to other dog owners. In preparation for our first Boston winter, I had originally purchased two sets of Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots and a container of Mushers Secret Paw Wax. Despite many attempts, neither of my dogs would tolerate wearing the Ultra Paws boots and the Mushers did not meet our needs, so we had to search for alternate options. MY DOGS WILL WEAR THEM: I was surprised to find that both of my dogs will wear these without any complaints. I assume this is due to the fact that the boots are thin (so they can feel the ground) and don’t hinder their ability to walk in any way. I was also concerned these boots might cause them to slip on the snow and ice, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue at all. THEY WORK: These boots are waterproof and do what we need them to do - they keep ice from building up on their paws, stop chunks of salt from getting inside their paws and prevent burning from the other chemicals that they put down on the sidewalks. They no longer limp or hold up their paws. As an added benefit, I find that the floors in my house are much cleaner during winter now too. THEY DON’T FALL OFF: I have to admit that I didn’t expect these boots to stay on, but they actually do! My dogs are usually off-leash, running and playing in the snow. Despite this, I have not lost a single boot. They are also relatively easy to both put on and take off. THEY ARE DURABLE: We do a lot of walking every day (on both concrete and grass) and these boots have held up extremely well. I’ve only had to throw away a couple and since there are 12 boots in a package, you can easily replace one. Also, I lightly rinse them and hang to dry after each walk in the hope that will make them last longer. THEY ARE COST-EFFECTIVE: As mentioned, I originally purchased the Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots, which cost $34.95 each. However, my dogs wouldn’t wear them, so they ended up being a waste of money. The Pawz boots might be expensive for what they are - essentially small, rubber balloons. However, the fact that my dogs will actually wear them (paired with the fact that they work and cost around $15 for 12) has made them a better, more cost-effective solution for us. SIZING: Both of my golden retrievers wear size large boots. There are several other golden retrievers in my neighborhood and they also wear size large. I was unsure what size to purchase initially, so I measured their paws and referred to the chart on the Paws website (http://pawzdogboots.com/size-chart/). While you definitely don’t want the boots to be too big, I would recommend sizing up if you were between sizes – only because it will be easier for you to get the boots on!
Review: Beware - UPDATED - I don’t think I’ve ever given a one star rating before, but this product deserves it. I bought a set of these for my male Belgian Tervuren, about a 70 pound dog. I had him stand on paper, drew lines in front of his claws and just behind his rear pad, measured the distance (3 5/8 inches) and followed the fitting advice to order the LARGE size. This size is for Akitas, Labs, etc. The balloon part is fine - there is enough room for his paw. HOWEVER (big problem alert), the neck of the boot is so tight that a) it takes two people to put it on his paw and b) it hurts his leg because of the constriction - he holds his paws up and tries not to stand on them, and c) it’s very difficult to pull the boots off the paws once you finally get them on because the neck is SO tight. Perhaps I got a defective set, but this product is of zero use for me. I have no idea what these were made for - baby giraffes? Seriously, the ankles on these things are so much too small that it’s laughable. UPDATE: I wrote to the Pawz company about this but nobody has responded. I wanted to say to those of you who have the same problem we did that if you cut the tops of the boots off just below the lip it becomes workable, at least it did for us. The boots can then be put on by one person (although women might have more trouble than men due to the hand strength issue - I'm a guy and I didn't have any trouble) and the boots do not fall off on a long walk. I can't speak to how they stay on with active play or work because we don't do that with this older dog. I am leaving my review at one star because this is an issue the company really needs to address, even if it is in such a basic way as to inform customers via some text on the label. The boots do seem to work once you alter them, and when they work they should get a better review than I am giving them, but...they are really awful straight out of the box and the company's response to my inquiry was terrible, as in non-existant. Pawz needs a wakeup call, so my rating stands. Just know what you are getting in to.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Protective boot solution that stays in place
*by A***R on July 1, 2018*

Perfect "boot" solution for my dog. I have a miniature Australian shepherd (22#), and this was the perfect size for her. They're a little tricky to get on, initially requiring a team effort by myself and my husband every time. Over time, however, I learned how to master it independently (within a week of constant winter wear). This was likely a combination of my dog becoming more familiar with the routine and my learning the best way to don the boots. In my experience: hold the boot open with 3 fingers of one hand, and support the dog's paw with your other hand. As you guide the paw into the boot, the paw hand can help hold the boot open and ensure no nails get caught in the process. Other positives: They're a good cold/muddy/rainy weather solution. The balloon-like fabric enables my dog to feel the ground, while still protecting her from cold and salted pavement or really messy conditions. She definitely likes these more than any other booties we've tried. After donning, she "high-steps" for the first few steps, then adjusts. She doesn't try to take them off (and can't). And unlike other boot options, they don't slide out of place. Note: these are definitely not meant to last for years. We threw 4 away within the first couple months because of tears. At this price point, however, it's worth it to me, especially as this is the only boot solution my dog has tolerated. (And if they were any thicker, I fear they'd be too difficult to stretch over paws.)
