The USB does setup as a com port and is powered from the USB port, the device works flawlessly for what I need it for. For the price, it is well worth it as I use many protocols over the RS485 for device discovery. It can only support USB TO RS232, USB TO RS485, USB TO TTL (UART), not support RS232 to TTL. And it can't support USB to convert to RS232, RS485 and TTL at the same time. And RS232, RS485 and TTL cannot be converted mutually.
