In the year 2000 I purchased a Black Decker Firestorm drill kit with two batteries and a charger for my late father, as a Father's Day gift. After he passed away, a few months later, I bought it back from his estate for almost the same price as what I originally paid for it. After almost 22 years the two included nickel cadmium battery packs died and took the charger with them. The included charger broke when I tried to charge the bad batteries forcing me to purchase a new charger. I just purchased a better charger and a nickel metal hydride battery pack on Amazon and it works great in the almost 22 year-old drill because it doesn't have the memory problem of nickel cadmium batteries. The batteries can usually be rebuilt, but I chose not to do that because I could still get better batteries and a better charger for less money, usually aftermarket. The manufacturers will stop making replacement batteries when they stop getting a significant return on their investment. There are all kinds of formulas and Calculus involved in that decision making process. They won't give you any notice of that.
