Using these rocks in a freshwater tank without letting them soak for an extreme amount of time (like 6 months to make sure that all the soft rock has broken down) could seriously impact a freshwater tank with scaleless fish. With loaches and I assume scaleless cats, you must know how sensitive your fish are to high kh and kh spikes so I would recommend avoiding base / reef rock like the plague. The best decorations for freshwater are river rock / lava rock and driftwood. I have two large pieces of driftwood and some slate + river rock in my FW ciclid tank and my experience supports the idea that driftwood can help soften the water a bit. Remember that plecos and loaches love driftwood and will feed on the algae that grows on it. I have friends who have had success replication the look of base rock with lava rock but do some research about how the rock can change your water chemistry. **Q: What is the shelf life for these rocks?
