(I'm a certified climbing instructor in the BSA and taught for 6 years, though I have nothing on real mountaneers.) This is a "dynamic" rope which means it has a BOING factor. It stretches with tension to ease the snag when a climber takes a fall. Using it for rappelling can be done, but I'd recommend using a static rope instead. If a rappeller needs to stop IMMEDIATELY, you wouldn't want a rope that would stop them lower than a static line. That rarely happens, but it could. But mostly, using it for rappelling would decrease some of the stretch over time when you climb with it. But if you need to occasionally rappel just to get down after you're done climbing or whatever, you can absolutely use this. Just make sure you never climb and take a big fall on a "static" rope. You'll remember this review in the middle of the biggest wedgie of your life. **Q: Is this a single rope?** A: Single rope at various sizes, for a gym rope you can go with the shorter size of 35m, but you may be too short for some high wall gyms, I would suggest going with a 70m version for outdoor use and you can use this size indoor too or get a less expensive indoor rope at a shorter length from your local REI shorter in bulk. **Q: Is this a good rope for a beginner as far as repelling or minor rock climbing?** A: Maybe. This is a DYNAMIC rope (aka Climbing rope). DYNAMIC ropes stretch. The alternative would be a STATIC rope. STATIC ropes are typically used for rappelling. STATIC ropes do not stretch. DYNAMIC ropes are used for climbing (aka FALLING). It is the stretch of the DYNAMIC rope that saves your life. If you fall on a STATIC rope, it will not stretch, so all that fall energy goes through you, hard....not good, potentially lethal.
