If you want to make a thicker layed look roof effect you will need to use some form of attchment like a plastic zip tie. Cuts easily with large scissors. Need to be careful of the cutting due to the cross connections. We stapled it to wood mounting and it is holding. There is a very heavy hay like smell that may offend some people. Be careful to choose which side you want showing before attaching. One side is great for a thatched roof look.
