If one leaves out a battery, there will be no complete circuit for the power to be delivered to anything. As others have stated, the fitment is a bit small so its a bit challenging to install/remove batteries. However, you do not have to worry about the batteries slipping out. As far as functionality, it does the job as advertised with no issues. Reminder: This connects 2 Double AA batteries in series. Meaning the voltage increases from 1.5V to 3V to provide more voltage to power hungry devices.
