One can extend the life of the control by turning it completely off, rather than let the auto-shut off continue to blink. Most heat pad controls have to be entirely unplugged to stop the blinking light. Sunbeam, at least, can be shut off without unplugging. **Q: Can this be used for shoulder arthritis? It seems like it's mostly for back/neck, so just wanted to see if it could also be used for shoulder as well** A: Yes but it's not designed specifically for shoulders so you'll have to bend it a little. This works for back, knee pain, etc. I use this pad for making yogurt. I've used a buckwheat filled bag designed for shoulders (heats up in the microwave) for fibro pain.
