Hold the catch in place, then use a pen or something small and sharp to mark where the holes are on the rod. Remove the catch, and use a small round file to make two grooves at the marks, so that the set screws (and handle) won't just slide off the rod. First, the set screws are indeed a softer metal and do strip easily (not the threads, but the channel the Allen wrench goes into). Going to your local hardware store and spending a dollar to get a couple of set screws made out of a better grade of metal may save you some aggravation as you attempt to tighten the screws with enough pressure for the handle to stay in place. Second, the handle installs on a circular rod, and the suggestion to spend a few minutes flattening the parts of the rod where the set screws come in contact is a good idea. This will improve the way the set screws contact the rod and make it easier for them to hold the handle in place. To do this, I used a small grinding wheel on a cordless drill, although the narrow end of a flat file would probably work okay, too. The contact points to file are 7/16" and 3/4" in from the front of the rod, and you don't have to remove a lot of material. Following these couple of tips, the handle is staying in place fine, staying on the rod securely enough to not slip as it is pulled to open the hood.
