As is, it's a lovely textured steel as shown in the photo, but the edges are square so it's tough on your hand after a while. Otherwise, a great knife for trimwork. Review: Affordable and well made skiving knife - I chose this particular style to use as a “paring” skiving knife. It came very sharp. I like the hammered finish. It has a tip protector that you can reuse. I haven’t used it yet but I would expect it to work very well with the design. The difference between a regular skiving knife and this one is that you can skive the leather extra thin because with no handle you can get closer to your work piece and keep a flatter angle on the blade.
