There are six buttons on the side which control the settings , and initially I thought that I was just not getting them adjusted correctly. But after weeks of having the item, I realized that sometimes it would "crash" if it was laid horizontally, and other times if it was laid vertically. It has to be "jiggled" or tapped for it to work. In other words, this particular one is defective.
