The purpose of this adapter is to convert S-video to composite. It does not work well in reverse. **Q: is the s-video connection male or female?** A: It's Male, as in, it has pins as opposed to holes. **Q: I want this to run to the S-video in on my DVD burner. Will it actually convert a standard composite video signal to S-video for better quality?** A: I don't know about it being able to improve the quality of the file passing through. But it does allow you to connect items which need composite jacks and you only have svideo available. They were both wired wrong. Obviously never tested. If you need something that works, get the StarTech one. They make an actual, real product. Even if you need to pair it with some male/female adapters, just get the adapters. Don't waste your time anywhere else. For context, I used this to connect an S-Video modded Atari 800XL to a Composite monitor. The mod disables native composite video, so StarTech's adapter allowed me to use it with my monitor without undoing the mod. Picture is crystal clear, everything looks exactly as expected.
