Just spray a LIGHT coat with even passes and be about 12-15 inches away. I used it on a Vietnamese straw hat to make it water resistant and protect the straw. The shellac DOES dry in minutes and then you can apply another coat--just repeat the coats(2-3 should easily do the job). Remember, water is enemy #1 to a straw hat and you can use this spray on practically any straw.
