We use a process called direct injection. We inject a liquid polyurethane into a mold which as it dries, expands to the upper to create a bond between the upper and the outsole. 
These cannot be resoled back to their original state. A cobbler could add a sole to it but you would lose the shock absorbency.

**Q: Is the cognac color decidedly more brownish than a cordovan reddish color? Trying to replace with the lighter color.**
A: Hello,
This cognac is slightly red in color. We do make a cocoa color that is a very brown in color
