According to the Honeywell instructions, it will handle 2 stage heating and one stage cooling; or 1 stage heating and 1 stage cooling. You can call honeywell customer service to see for sure: 1-800-468-1502 ... that is the number on the instructions.From what I can see in the directions, the thermostat was designed to handle a wide range of heating (gas, oil, electric, hot water and steam) systems and air conditioning. There are several wiring options depending on the systems you have, so READ the directions prior to starting and follow them during the instalation.My thermostat is NOT cheap Chinese plastic, it was assembled in Mexico. It has worked very well for heating my home last winter and was working fine for cooling last week .... we are colder again this week! It is much more accurate than the programable Honeywell thermostat it replaced. **Q: Can this replace a Honeywell old 80's style heat only dial?** A: Yes. All you have to do is simply not connect any AC wires to the terminal. When you remove the old thermostat, take note of what wires went to what terminals, and try to duplicate. The instruction sheet will make it clear failing that.
