For these reasons I found him to be more valuable than Wiersbe and McGee although they also offer useful works as well

Gangel presents a balanced overview of Daniel, not hesitating to call on numerous commentators who don’t always agree with each other. He does proffer his own opinions, but in an objective tone – avoiding the magisterial diktats often seen in commentaries. His explanations of the complex historical background and timelines in Daniel are clear and detailed, but not pedantic. While he holds pre-trib / pre-mil beliefs, he touches on various other interpretations of the more abstruse passages in an objective way.For these reasons I found him to be more valuable than Wiersbe and McGee although they also offer useful works as well. When it comes to humanizing Daniel in his own situations and offering practical applications for today’s culture, John Lennox does the best job, by far, in Against the Flow, the Inspiration of Daniel in an Age of Relativism.

    strong on God's sovereignty

I read this commentary from the perspective of an average churchgoer who wanted to take the book of Daniel more seriously. This commentary will help you read Daniel and walk away with a better understanding. The perspective is conservative and evangelical, though the author (Kenneth Gangel) does mention other interpretations.God's sovereignty is central to the book of Daniel and this commentary. Gangel believes in the historicity of the accounts portrayed (lions den, fiery furnace, etc) and in predictive prophecy (God describing almost 400 years of history in the second half of the book). His summaries and applications emphasize that God is the main character of this book.Gangel provides a great balance of outlines, summaries, and specifics to help the reader understand the text. This is accessible for the average reader, and there are references if you would like a more academic treatment. If you'd like to understand the book of Daniel more, this commentary is certainly worth reading.

Okay, but there are better options

*by J***. on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 18, 2019*

This commentary is okay, but I've found "The Message of Daniel" by Dale Ralph Davis to be much deeper theologically and the updated entry in the Tyndale House OT Commentary series by Paul House to be much more detailed textually and historically. By comparison, it feels like this Holman commentary was written for young teenagers or adults who are new to the faith, whereas the other two commentaries are written for adults who are mature believers. It's not bad, just a little shallow compared to other options.
