In 1910 Josef Langenberg founded a company in ‘s-Heerenberg, located on the Dutch-German border. In the 1960s another factory was established in Emmerich, on the German side of the border. In Germany, the brand is called Katjes, in the Netherlands Katja. Since 2010 the company is allowed to call itself Royal Fassin. Katjes Monkeys are a combination of Katjes licorice and banana gummy. Monkeys, banana, and licorice. How could I not be curious? I'm not sure what I was expecting. The licorice doesn't hit you over the head but it is definitely there. When I opened the bag, the monkey faces made me smile before I ever tasted one. And when I tasted the first I thought it was unusual and tasty. I had a few more and put the bag away. But then something happened. They called to me from across the room... From down the hall... Before I knew it the bag was gone and there were more bags on the way. A month in and I've shared bags for friends and co-workers Even people who aren't fond of licorice can't help but try these. And a week out, many describe the same affinity for them. These monkeys make friends easily.
