But she occasionally has trouble getting started...Sheryl Green's new book offers a solution to that challenge, as well as a fantastic way to inspire your child and spark their imagination. Through a series of writing prompts and story ideas, the book offers kids a kick-start to get their minds traveling down different paths. From scary to sweet to silly, there is something for everyone here.The prompts are offered in divided chapters that also offer suggestions on the writing process and creativity in children, making the book a great collaborative effort for adults and children. The author of this book gives ten writing prompts and then does something wonderful. She asks two or three questions about the prompt to help move the writer forward. That is one thing my students often struggle with. They choose a prompt but don’t know how to move forward.Chapter two deals with moving forward when you get writer’s block. She offers a lot of hints and tips to help you with this problem. Then you get ten more writing prompts.Chapter three dealt with the elements of a story. You know what I am talking about. You create a world, and then populate that world with characters you have created. Then you are given more tips and finally ten more writing prompts.Chapter four is where the real work begins. You’ve written a story and this chapter teaches you how to make it better through editing and revision. This of course is followed by more tips and then ten more prompts.This book is beneficial for children and adults alike. I can see me using this in my classroom at school. "Once Upon A Time" by Sheryl Green has over 40 story starters to choose from for my elementary and middle school students. I especially like that each topic includes a detailed story starter PLUS additional questions throughout the journal page to help young writers add details to their creative essays. ( see pics)In addition, the journal style book has a TABLE OF CONTENTS AND PAGE NUMBERS ON THE PAGES-YEAH!!This may not seem like a big deal but most journal-style books do not have these features. And if you are a tutor, teacher, or homeschooling parent who is trying to write curriculum, assign topics, and keep track of which topics are assigned to which students, page numbers and a Table of Contents are essential! The chapters in between the story starters include great tips, techniques, and exercises to help young readers fire up their imagination, create an engaging storyline, and add interesting details about their characters.I was given a free copy of "Once Upon A Time" by the author to review. But in all honesty, I would have bought this book without any hesitation !
