Review: It Works! - I heard that taking 400 mg of magnesium glycinate at night helps with sleep and feeling more refreshed in the morning, so I ordered this. I didn't have the highest hopes but it works! I had previously taken magnesium, but not the glycinate form. That did not do anything for me. But this product does! Pros: I struggle some nights going to sleep because of restless leg syndrome, racing thoughts, etc. I take one of these about an hour before bed, drink a glass of water, and it really helps. Is it a placebo effect? Maybe, but I don't think so. I ordered it for my adult daughter, too, who lives away at college. She really struggles with insomnia and it's greatly helped her, too. She has even had a couple of prescriptions for sleeping meds. So far, she has been taking only the magnesium at night for about two weeks. I'm so thankful to have found something to help her sleep! Cons: I really don't know of any at this point. Am I feeling more refreshed in the mornings? I don't think so, but falling asleep at night is the reason I ordered them and that's a win! The tablets are small enough that they're not hard to swallow. There's no aftertaste or anything. I am seriously impressed!

**Q: I don't understand. Says 400mg magnesium glycinate but yields 56mg of essential magnesium. Does this mean it is not 400mg but only 56mg?**
A: Yes, the labeling is correct in that the product contains 400mg of Magnesium Glycinate bearing 56mg of elemental magnesium.  

It's important to note that Elemental Magnesium is NOT the same as Magnesium Glycinate which is elemental magnesium combined with the amino acid glycine. The glycine is utilized to enhance its, magnesium's, absorption and availability to the body. If elemental magnesium is taken by itself, without the above aid of glycine or other variants, its bioavailability is reportedly to be very low in addition to several other factors that may limit its absorption such as dose, dietary factors, and the amount of food eaten. Magnesium is considerably used for the body's immediate needs as it is not stored by the body (typically up to 24 hours), so the more elemental magnesium you take, the more you will excrete as the absorption rate will be relatively constant (it has been shown that elemental magnesium's minimum absorption is roughly 15%, meaning basically 85% of it, elemental magnesium, would predominantly go to waste). 

The 56mg of elemental magnesium in the 400mg California Essentials Magnesium Glycinate supplement bears approximately 13% of the recommended daily value of 425mg, approximately  the same amount your body would normally absorb if you solely took 400mg of an elemental magnesium supplement.  Hence, the California Essentials product provides the equivalent amount of elemental magnesium in easy to take small tablets, that are gentle and well-tolerated on the digestive system (as opposed to taking a direct elemental magnesium without the attached glycine amino acid). Additionally, the magnesium glycinate supplement is meant to be complimentary, not a replacement, nor a substitute, for a healthy diet (consisting of magnesium rich foods) to satisfy the recommended daily intake (if addressing a specific deficiency, please consult with a physician who can prescribed the required proper dosage / daily serving size).

It‘s also important to be aware that some vitamin / supplement companies attempt to conceal the amount of elemental magnesium in their Magnesium Glycinate formulas. This is illustrated on their product's label Supplement Facts section by ambiguously displaying its primary ingredient as Magnesium 400mg (as Magnesium Glycinate) with an incorrect DV% of 100 or omission denoted with an asterisk for the DV%, thus implying their products are offering a specific amount of elemental magnesium, typically 400mg. This is disingenuous, or, generally evasive, because, in actuality, as stated above, their product, which purportedly contains 400mg of elemental magnesium, is, instead, 400mg of Magnesium Glycinate, and, conveniently fails to mention the true amount of elemental magnesium contained in each serving (this lack of transparency may also circumvent FDA product labeling guidelines). However, unlike these companies, California Essentials is one of a few supplement brands that are upfront and transparent with their customers about the actual measurement / composition of their product line (3rd party tested for purity and potency).

**Q: Ordered a new bottle, received it onn4/4/23. This bottle has a strong acetone type odor! Has something changed? I'm afraid to take it!**
A: I’ve used this magnesium for about 2 yrs and never experienced a bad odor upon opening the bottle. I suggest you return that bottle and order another one. Good luck

**Q: how can I get liquid magnesium, I cant swollar tablets or  capsules?**

**Q: These have gone from white to yellow why?**
A: I don't know what they've put into these pills that caused this, but I've never had any medication before which after a month or two became rancid, turned from white to brown, and had an awful smell while in the bottle. Note that there are 4 other reviews on this site in addition to mine that complain of a bad or "nail polish remover" odor with this manufacturer's product.  Do you really want to put this in your stomach? I've taken various manufacturer's magnesium supplement products over the years, and never encountered this with any other company's product.
