## Description

This APC UPS battery backup & surge protector (Back-UPS Pro BX850M) is a battery backup built for computers, routers, wireless networks, workstations, and home entertainment electronics. As a UPS battery backup and computer uninterruptible power supply unit, this battery backup surge protector automatically switches to backup power the moment it detects an outage or unsafe voltage fluctuation — keeping your uninterruptible power supply running and your data protected from damaging power surges and spikes. This backup battery power supply is a trusted UPS power supply for computer, external hard drive, and router setups — a reliable battery backup for computer use so you stay connected and your data stays safe even when the power doesn't. As a back up battery power supply, this 850VA UPS features Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) to correct brownouts and overvoltage without draining the ups battery, and is compatible with Active PFC power supplies for reliable performance with modern computers. This upc battery backup & surge protector uses a user-replaceable ups battery (APC Replacement Battery Cartridge RBC17, sold separately), so your battery back up and surge protection keeps performing at full strength — no need to replace the entire backup battery unit..

Review: Good product, disappointing (Supplier) support - This is my 2nd APC UPS backup. The first is over two years old and has performed flawlessly supporting a high-end workstation. I bought this 2nd, somewhat smaller model for my office PC. I was pleased with my purchase for six weeks until the first blackout intervention due to a thunderstorm. The UPS did not survive, when the power was restored the device insisted there was a short on the output, which of course there wasn't. The total load on the output is less than 30% of the rating, but even with the load removed it still alarmed. This began a three week adventure: - desertcart does not allow a defective return-replacement (because of the batteries I assume). Beware. - APC has a 3 year warranty but their support process is agonizing. I spent several hours in chat-windows answering inane questions like 'Is it plugged in?' or 'Are you sure there is no short on the output?' At one point the agent (who was obviously multi-tasking) picked the wrong chat-window to type to another customer. That was interesting to sort out. - I finally found someone with a brain who started a swap-process. APC would send a replacement and I would return the defect. - The replacement arrived 10 days after the failure event. I installed it and everything was fine. I re-packaged the defect in the shipping box. But there was no information about where to send it. - Another week passed before I got an email with a pre-paid return label as a pdf attachment. I assume the original item was an infant-mortality so Five Stars for the product. Battery life is over 20 minutes with my load and the PowerChute software puts the system to sleep before the UPS runs dry. It's an imperfect world: screws fall out. Time will tell if this was an isolated event or a chronic problem, but up to now I am optimistic.
Review: Works great- as advertised. APC is a quality UPS brand. - ACP Brand is always good. I have 4 in my home office (Work computer, Stable Diffusion dedicated computer, network infrastructure, and electronic music devices). Word of advice, these are not for sustained usage during an outage for a standard desktop. (Which should be obvious to people). Just keep your computer on it, and just one monitor, so if they power goes out, you can save your work and turn off the machine. Make sure non-essential items are on the non-battery-backup plugs. Works great for intermittent outages. Also, waking up in the middle of the nights to beep beep beep-- I don't have to check to see if the power is out-- (not complaining about the noise). It's calm enough to be informative yet alerting.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How long will this UPS power my system when the power goes out?**
A: Runtimes of any UPS will vary based on the amount of power required by your connected devices.

**Q: Will the UPS automatically switch off from the battery backup when power is restored?**
A: Yes, when adequate power is restored to the UPS and is within the operating voltage range of the UPS, it will revert to passing utility power to connected electronics.

**Q: My UPS is on, but my power button is blinking and beeping.**
A: The battery needs to be connected first. Please read the user manual for instructions on connecting the battery.

**Q: Can I plug the UPS into an extension cord, or does it have to be plugged into a wall outlet?**

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great- as advertised. APC is a quality UPS brand.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tested Under (Lightning) Fire
*by G***S on March 18, 2026*

Lightning struck 3 houses down and fried our modem through the coax line, which also caused the ethernet-in port on our router to go dead. My computer, however, was protected with the APC Back-UPS Pro 850VA and was totally isolated (thank you wi-fi!) I could hear it click over into emergency power as soon as I saw the lighting flash, so I consider this to be tested under fire. The companion software is visually bare-bones but otherwise works great with Windows 11, the app runs quietly in the background and doesn't use much of anything, and is very programmable with the UPS. For mine, if the power is out for 60 seconds, my computer is sent a command to hibernate. Maybe less important, but I hear this protecting my computer from 'dirty power' at times as well. Outside of the regular testing interval, I hear the relays click on the rare occasion the lights slightly dim as well. Unit has been in service for 3.5 years and still performs wonderfully. I like how it's incredibly quiet (UPS of old would alarm annoyingly).
