His method of learning a foreign language by reading for pleasure on your level is brilliant and it works. If you follow the advice on how to how best to read this book as explained in the introduction, you WILL improve. After my students read to themselves first, they then read to me and we review the vocabulary words at the end of the chapter together, in addition, to correctly pronouncing any words they needed help with. Then, they read the chapter again with an even better understanding and they love it. They hear they're own progress and I remind them to listen out for similar conversational phrases that they've read in the book, in real life conversations around them. I also use Olly's Short Stories in Italian for myself and purchased the Spanish and French versions as I've become totally motivated to enhance my linguistic abilities overall.
