Many of Amazon's customers are not savvy enough to check the FDA's website, to read through a recall notice, or to understand what it is telling them. They do not understand how the supplement industry works. They don't check with the supplement company. There are hundreds of supplement companies. They formulate their products to make them unique in some way and make their brand stand out. They then source the raw materials and manufacturing from a limited number of suppliers. These suppliers may, for example, stock large quantities of various powders, and have the machinery and trained personnel to fill and label small bags or capsules with a mix of powders as specified in their contract with the supplement company. They ship the finished products to the supplement company or direct to Amazon, which ships individual bottles to customers. It is the suppliers that the FDA may cite for "violations of current good manufacturing practices". What does that mean? Possibly not taking enough care to mix and measure ingredients perfectly accurately. Or, the supplier's building could be infested with pests. All they tell us in this notice is "to date, there have been no reported ilnesses or injuries as a result of this situation." Should you panic and throw away all your supplements from brand X, Y or Z mentioned in the recall notice? I didn't. There was nothing wrong with them that I could see, smell or taste, and I had no side effects. [The following is just my opinion: the FDA is not looking out for consumers. It is coordinating an attack on supplement companies because they compete with Big Pharma. Billions of dollars are shifting from drugs to supplements because you and I have found that they work just as well or better, along with lifestyle changes. These inspections are more likely part of an effort to disrupt the supplement industry, increase their costs, cause confusion and taint their image in the eyes of consumers. They do this because most of the high ranking officials at FDA are former Pharma. Don't fall for it. Do your own fact checking.] In this particular case, it turns out the supplier had not kept their cGMP certificates current. VitaMonk is listed as one of the 850 supplement companies affected. The FDA notice doesn't list individual affected products - if a supplement company had a contract with this particular supplier for ANY product in the past six years, they were caught up in the recall. VitaMonk had ONE affected product, HMB. They had already stopped using this supplier for that product a year earlier. Amazon compounded the impact by sending out recall notices to anyone who purchased ANY products from one of these 850 supplement companies, in some cases issuing thousands of dollars in refunds out of sellers' accounts, or removing products from the Amazon catalog. This can put a small supplement company out of business. If you value these small supplement companies that educate us, help us feel better, get off/stay off drugs and regain our health, please stop for moment and consider how you might best support them, and go do that.
